πŸ’― Big Numbers Β· Lakhs, Crores & Millions

Numbers up to 10 crore (Indian) and 100 million (International). Learn both comma systems, place value vs face value, succ/pred, standard ↔ expanded form, numerals ↔ words, and comparing.

⚑ Cheat sheet

1 thousand1 lakh10 lakh = 1 million1 crore = 10 million10 crore = 100 million
1,0001,00,00010,00,000 = 1,000,0001,00,00,000 = 10,000,00010,00,00,000 = 100,000,000
1 The Indian place value system β–Ό

In the Indian system, places are grouped like this from the right:

Ten Crores10,00,00,000 Crores1,00,00,000 Ten Lakhs10,00,000 Lakhs1,00,000 Ten Thousands10,000 Thousands1,000 Hundreds100 Tens10 Ones1
10⁸10⁷10⁢10⁡ 10⁴10³10²10¹10⁰
Read 5,34,67,890 as "five crore thirty-four lakh sixty-seven thousand eight hundred ninety".
β€’ 5 β†’ ten crores (5 Γ— 10⁷ = 5 crore = 5,00,00,000)
β€’ 34 β†’ lakhs (34 Γ— 10⁡ = 34 lakh = 34,00,000)
β€’ 67 β†’ thousands (67 Γ— 10Β³ = 67,000)
β€’ 890 β†’ ones-tens-hundreds
πŸ’‘ The Indian groupings are "3 then pairs": hundreds + tens + ones, then thousands (pair), then lakhs (pair), then crores (pair).
2 The International place value system β–Ό

In the International system, places group in threes:

Hundred Millions100,000,000 Ten Millions10,000,000 Millions1,000,000 Hundred Thousands100,000 Ten Thousands10,000 Thousands1,000 Hundreds100 Tens10 Ones1
53,467,890 = "fifty-three million four hundred sixty-seven thousand eight hundred ninety".
πŸ’‘ Both systems are equal in value β€” just a different way of grouping the digits with commas. 53,467,890 (international) = 5,34,67,890 (Indian).
3 The comma rules β€” Indian vs International β–Ό
SystemRulePattern (right β†’ left)Example
Indian First comma after 3 digits, then every 2 digits 3 - 2 - 2 - 2 … 1,23,45,67,890
International Comma every 3 digits 3 - 3 - 3 … 1,234,567,890
Try it: 7654321
β€’ Indian β†’ 76,54,321 (3, then pair, then pair)
β€’ International β†’ 7,654,321 (groups of 3)
⚠️ Don't put a comma at the very start. If you only have 5 digits, the Indian system gives one comma (e.g. 12,345) β€” not two.
4 Standard form & Expanded form β–Ό

Standard form = the regular number, with commas. Expanded form = the number broken into the place values of each digit, joined with + signs.

Standard: 5,34,567
Expanded: 5,00,000 + 30,000 + 4,000 + 500 + 60 + 7
πŸ’‘ Skip places where the digit is 0 (e.g. 5,03,007 expands to 5,00,000 + 3,000 + 7 β€” the zeroes are silent).
5 Place value vs Face value β–Ό

Two important β€” and often confused β€” definitions:

  • Face value of a digit = the digit itself, regardless of where it sits.
  • Place value of a digit = the digit Γ— the worth of its place.
In 5,32,45,678 (the underlined digit is 2):
β€’ Face value = 2 (always just the digit)
β€’ Place value = 2 Γ— 1,00,000 = 2,00,000 (the 2 is in the lakhs place)
⚠️ Face value never changes. Place value depends on where the digit sits.
6 Numerals ↔ Words (Indian) β–Ό

To read a number, name each group from left:

  1. Crores group (the digits before the first comma in 7+ digits)
  2. Lakhs group (next 2 digits)
  3. Thousands group (next 2 digits)
  4. Hundreds + tens + ones (last 3 digits)
8,36,58,086 β†’ "eight crore thirty-six lakh fifty-eight thousand eighty-six".
5,03,007 β†’ "five lakh three thousand seven" (skip empty places).
"Two crore five lakh" β†’ 2,05,00,000.
πŸ’‘ In the International system the same number reads as: 83,658,086 β†’ "eighty-three million six hundred fifty-eight thousand eighty-six".
7 Successor & Predecessor β–Ό

The successor is the next number (+1). The predecessor is the previous number (βˆ’1).

β€’ Successor of 4,99,999 β†’ 5,00,000
β€’ Predecessor of 1,00,00,000 (1 crore) β†’ 99,99,999
β€’ Successor of 9,99,99,999 β†’ 10,00,00,000 (10 crore)
πŸ’‘ When you cross a power of 10, the carries cascade β€” every 9 becomes 0 and the next digit goes up by 1.
8 Comparing big numbers (<, >, =) β–Ό
  1. Count digits. The number with more digits is larger (e.g. 1,00,00,000 > 99,99,999).
  2. Same digit count? Compare from the LEFT (highest place first), digit by digit, until they differ.
4,35,68,149 vs 4,35,69,149: same digits up to 4,35,6_,_4_. Hundreds-of-thousands digit: 8 < 9, so 4,35,68,149 < 4,35,69,149.
πŸ’‘ The "< >" mouth always opens toward the bigger number β€” like a hungry crocodile.
