๐Ÿ“– English ยท Chapter 1 ยท Nouns

Grade 5 ยท CBSE ยท Learn about all the different kinds of nouns โ€” and spot them like a pro.

1 What is a noun? โ–ผ

A noun is a naming word. It names a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.

Examples:
Person: Crispin, teacher, doctor, friend
Place: Bahrain, school, park, stadium
Animal: dog, lion, fish, eagle
Thing: ball, book, pencil, phone
Idea/feeling: love, honesty, freedom, fear
๐Ÿ’ก Tip: If a word names something, it's a noun. If it's an action (like "run"), it's a verb. If it describes (like "happy"), it's an adjective.
2 Common & Proper Nouns โ–ผ

A common noun is a general name. A proper noun is the specific name of a person, place, thing or day.

CommonProper

โš ๏ธ Rule: Proper nouns always start with a CAPITAL letter โ€” anywhere they appear in a sentence.
3 Singular & Plural Nouns (the regular rules) โ–ผ

9 Possessive Nouns (who owns what?) โ–ผ

To show something belongs to someone, we use an apostrophe.

SituationRuleExample
Singular nounAdd 'sCrispin's book ยท the dog's tail ยท Sara's pen
Plural ending in sAdd only 'the boys' shoes ยท the players' kits
Plural NOT ending in sAdd 'sthe children's toys ยท the women's shoes ยท the men's team
โš ๏ธ Common mistake: don't write "childrens'" โ€” "children" doesn't end in s, so it's children's.
